McConkie Photography operates on two basic principles, and the first is that photographs have power. They can evoke memories, tell stories, or even transport us back in time. Our stories are not entirely individual; we are connected to other places, people, and times. In other words, our lives can only be understood in context.
The second principle is embodied in what can be termed "the spirit of place.” Places are sometimes made holy by events that have transpired. Anciently when Moses went to the mount it was the Lord who commanded him to “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5). It was made holy by the presence of Jehovah. For us, these sacred places are all around—places like Nauvoo, Rocky Ridge, San Juan Hill, Liberty Jail, or Carthage. They are consecrated ground, ground made holy by the blood of the Saints and by their faith and by their sacrifice.
McConkie Photography specializes in taking photographs that represent the spirit of place. In addition to current projects, I am happy to explore other photographic projects which tell stories of faith and courage. Currently I am not accepting photo assignments for weddings, family photo shoots, etc. If you would like a consultation about a custom project tailored to meet your specific interests, please contact me. The Gallery of Light is a small Gallery located at 85 North Main Street in Kaysville, Utah. It features artistic and simple photographs that cause our minds to reflect on times past. Its goal is simple: to provide a little window through which we may reflect on people who faced tremendous challenges yet pressed forward with courage and faith. The current show at the gallery is Nauvoo: Spirit of Place.
The Gallery of Light has an open format—one can simply come in and look and ponder. Or, if you would like, I would be happy to relate the stories and thoughts behind the photographs. I also welcome small groups (families, YM/YW groups, etc.) to come for an hour-long presentation about some of the stories and events my work honors. Times may be scheduled here. There is no charge for the gallery experience. Gallery hours are Thurs-Sat 6pm to 9pm or as reserved and scheduled.
